keph / keph104 — Laws of Motion

1. Introduction

While kinematics describes how objects move, dynamics addresses why they move. This chapter establishes the governing laws.

Key Definitions

  • Force — any external agency that changes a body's state of motion
  • Inertia — the resistance of a body to changes in its state of motion
  • Momentum (p) — product of mass and velocity; p = mv

Newton's Laws

  • First Law — a body remains at rest or in uniform motion unless acted on by a net external force
  • Second Law — F = dp/dt; net force equals rate of change of momentum
  • Third Law — every action has an equal and opposite reaction
More than a summary.

Every chapter ships with four complementary learning modes — read, listen, define, and visualise.
